Course Overview

Test Automation Fundamentals with Selenium, Cucumber, Gherkin & Maven will leave students with a solid understanding of practical automation concepts using the Selenium/WebDriver API, Cucumber, and Maven to drive consistent functional and non-functional tests as part of the regular build process. Students will learn the core API, tools, and how to work with them together to create powerful testing harnesses. We’ll conclude with a brief discussion of these skills in a wider Continuous Integration environment. 

Course Objectives

This “skills-centric” course is approximately 50% hands-on lab and 50% lecture, designed to train attendees in essential web testing and Selenium skills, coupling the most current, effective techniques with the soundest industry practices. Throughout the course students will be led through a series of progressively advanced topics, guided by our expert instructor, where each topic consists of lecture, group discussion, hands-on lab exercises, and lab review.

This course provides indoctrination in the practical use of the umbrella of technologies that are on the leading edge of test engineering.  Working in a hands-on learning environment, led by our expert practitioner, students will learn:

  • Test-Driven and Behavior-Driven Testing concepts
  • An overview of the Selenium WebDriver API
  • How the Page Object model works
  • How to use Cucumber
  • Gherkin and Automated Acceptance Tests
  • An overview Maven and how to configure testing in Maven
  • Cucumber in the JVM
  • An overview of how it all works in Continuous Integration

Course Prerequisites

This is an intermediate level course, geared for Test Engineers, Quality Assurance Engineers, and their management who have prior knowledge of Selenium basics. Code examples are in a combination of the specific domain-specific languages and Java, so some experience in object-oriented development with Java is expected. The WebDriver portion also assumes some prior exposure to the Selenium family of tools.

NOTE: For some of the Selenium oriented labs, attendees should have some familiarity with basic Java syntax prior to attending this class. Basic Java fundamentals are NOT covered this course.  For attendees who may be light on Java skills, exercise code may be copied and pasted to complete those exercises.
